Each route answers a different question. A master's degree is the right choice if you want the credential that large Australian employers, including the big banks and many government agencies, screen for, or if you are an international student who needs a course that supports a visa. It is also the most expensive and slowest route, at 18 months to two years of full-time study or longer part time.

A TAFE diploma gives you a nationally recognised AQF level 5 qualification at a fraction of the cost, and it suits people without a degree who want a practical foundation. University short courses such as RMIT Online's are the cheapest way to add one specific skill or test your interest, but they are non-award courses.

A bootcamp trades recognition for speed. Twelve intensive weeks can make you portfolio-ready, which works best if you already bring domain experience from finance, health, resources or government.

What else to weigh

Start with the AQF level you actually need. A Certificate IV (level 4) or Diploma of Information Technology (level 5) builds foundations. A graduate certificate or graduate diploma (level 8) is a shorter postgraduate step, and a coursework master's (level 9) is the full professional qualification. If you have a degree in an unrelated field, a graduate certificate can be a lower-risk way to test the subject, and at some universities it can count towards the master's. Check the credit arrangements before enrolling.

Understand your type of place. Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) are subsidised by the government, and eligible students can defer their contribution through HECS-HELP. They are common for undergraduate study but limited in postgraduate data science. Most master's places are domestic fee-paying, where eligible students can usually borrow through FEE-HELP and repay through the tax system once they earn above the threshold.
