Both are fully online and part-time, and each costs roughly £11,000–£13,000 in total, about a third of Imperial's £39,900 online MSc.

Imperial College London remains the most rigorous option, and Edinburgh's online data science MSc programmes offer flexible exit points. The bigger UK advantage, though, is funding that most countries lack: if you are employed, a Multiverse apprenticeship or a government-funded Skills Bootcamp can train you without tuition fees.

We did not survey students or interview alumni, and the ratings are our editorial scores, not aggregated reviews.

We weighed six factors:

• Curriculum depth. Coverage of statistics, machine learning, deep learning and data engineering, and whether the programme has caught up with generative AI.
• Format. Asynchronous or live, and whether the pace is realistic alongside a full-time job.
• Credential recognition. A UK degree from a recognised awarding body, an apprenticeship standard, and a certificate of attendance mean very different things to an employer.
• Total cost. The full price including every module, not the per-module headline.

How do you narrow down the best data science courses in the UK?

Check who awards the qualification

For any degree, confirm the provider is a recognised UK degree-awarding body. GOV.UK explains how to check. All the universities on this list qualify. For bootcamps and short courses, ignore the branding and look at the syllabus, who teaches it and which employers are involved.

Work out the full cost and your funding options

Most online MSc programmes charge per module, which spreads the cost but makes the total easy to underestimate. Add every module, the dissertation and any annual fee increases. Eligible home students may be able to use a Postgraduate Master's Loan, including for distance-learning courses if they live in England when the course starts, so check the Student Finance rules for your situation. Some universities also offer alumni discounts.

Ask your employer about apprenticeships

If you are employed, ask your HR or learning and development team whether your employer uses its apprenticeship levy or funding for data and AI apprenticeships. • Data scientist: you need statistics and machine learning in depth. Bath, Imperial or Edinburgh's Data Science Technologies MSc fit best, with York as the entry point if you are coming from another subject.
• Machine learning or AI engineer: you need software engineering alongside ML. York's computer science grounding, Bath's specialist AI curriculum or Multiverse's Level 6 AI and Machine Learning Fellowship are the closest fits.

• What is the total cost, including every module and the dissertation, at the pace I can realistically manage?
• Is the provider a recognised degree-awarding body, and could my employer fund this through an apprenticeship instead?
• What maths and programming background do successful students have, and is there a preparatory course?
• How much teaching is live, and at what times in UK time?
• Can I pause between modules, or leave with a PgCert or PgDip if my circumstances change?

These suit people who want an intensive, cohort-based push. Check the total cost, any income-share terms and outcome figures that count everyone who enrolled.

Consider part-time degrees and continuing education

The Open University offers a part-time BSc (Hons) Data Science for people who want a full degree studied flexibly over several years. The University of Cambridge's Institute of Continuing Education runs part-time courses for adult learners. Neither made our top eight, but both suit specific needs.

Plan around time zones and your workload

Most online MSc programmes are asynchronous, with any live sessions on UK time (GMT or BST). That suits UK learners and much of Europe but can be awkward from Asia or the Americas. Budget your weekly hours honestly. One module at a time alongside a full-time job is realistic for most people.

A note for international students

The Graduate Route applies to eligible degrees completed while studying in the UK on a Student visa, not online study from abroad, and applications made from 1 January 2027 get 18 months rather than two years. If you have a first-class or strong 2:1 degree in a quantitative subject and the budget, Imperial offers the most rigorous online programme in the UK. Edinburgh suits people who want the option to stop at a PgCert or PgDip. Bath has January, May and September starts, so you rarely wait long for an intake. Imperial's applications for 2026 entry have already closed, so plan ahead if it is your first choice.

If you are switching careers

The most reliable route into data in the UK is usually through a data analyst role. If you are employed, ask whether your employer will fund a Multiverse apprenticeship, since you keep your salary and pay no tuition. If you are between roles in England, a Skills Bootcamp offers free training and an interview. York's conversion MSc is a strong next step once you are sure data is the right direction.

If you are a manager or team lead

You probably need fluency rather than engineering depth. The Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme covers AI strategy and implementation in six weeks and is designed for business audiences.
