India's tech job market in 2026 rewards skills you can demonstrate — Python, SQL, machine learning, cloud and, increasingly, generative and agentic AI — more than any single certificate. This hub maps where the jobs are, which skills employers screen for, and the realistic ways to learn them in India, from free IIT lectures to two-year online degrees.

India's tech job landscape

India's tech employment comes from three kinds of employer: IT services firms, global capability centres and product companies. IT services companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech remain the largest employers of engineers and run large internal training academies. Global capability centres (GCCs) — the in-house technology, analytics and engineering units of multinational banks, retailers, pharma and technology companies — have expanded steadily and now do a growing share of their parent companies' data and AI work from India. Product companies and start-ups hire fewer people but often give them broader, more hands-on roles.

Geography still shapes hiring, even with hybrid work. Bengaluru has the deepest mix of start-ups, product companies and GCCs. Hyderabad hosts large engineering centres of global technology firms around HITEC City and Gachibowli. Pune combines IT services with automotive and manufacturing software; Chennai is strong in SaaS, IT services and manufacturing; Delhi NCR is home to consumer internet companies, consulting firms and many GCCs; and Mumbai leads in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) technology.

Public policy is pushing in the same direction. The government's IndiaAI Mission funds compute access, datasets and AI skilling, while NPTEL, SWAYAM and the Skill India Digital Hub make a large body of structured learning free to access.

In-demand roles and skills

The roles with the most sustained demand in India are data analyst, data scientist, machine learning engineer, AI or GenAI engineer, data engineer, cloud and DevOps engineer, cybersecurity analyst and full-stack developer. Entry-level hiring is most open for analyst, support-engineering and developer roles; ML and AI roles usually go to people who already have some engineering or analytics experience.

The biggest shift of the last two years is in what "AI skills" means. Fewer teams train models from scratch; many more build applications on top of large language models, using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluation, guardrails and agentic workflows that call tools and APIs. Interviews have not dropped the fundamentals, though. Expect SQL, statistics, Python and core machine learning questions before anyone asks you about agents.

Ways to learn tech in India

You can learn tech in India through five broad routes, and most successful learners combine two of them.

• Recognised online degrees. The IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications is an IIT degree studied online with in-person exams and several exit points. BITS Pilani's Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) offer M.Tech degrees, including one in AI and machine learning, for employed professionals. IISc runs an online M.Tech in Data Science and Business Analytics for professionals nominated by their employers.
• Continuing-education and executive programmes. IITs, IIITs and IIMs run certificate and diploma programmes for working professionals, often delivered with an EdTech company that handles the platform and learner support. They carry institutional brand weight; check who teaches the live sessions.
• EdTech cohort programmes. Scaler, upGrad, Great Learning and Simplilearn run live online programmes with mentors, projects and career services, usually with weekday and weekend batches and EMI options.
• Global platforms and vendor certifications. Coursera and edX host university and industry programmes, and certifications from Google, Microsoft, IBM and AWS are widely recognised by Indian employers, especially IT services firms.
• Free public options. NPTEL and SWAYAM offer full semester-length courses from the IITs and IISc, with an optional proctored exam for a certificate. The Skill India Digital Hub covers entry-level digital skills, and Kaggle and Hugging Face offer free hands-on practice.

How to choose a tech course in India

Choose a course by the outcome you need first and the brand second. This checklist covers what most buyers skip:

1. Credential. Do you need a degree — for government roles, higher study abroad or strict HR filters — or will a certificate plus a strong portfolio do? Certificates and executive diplomas are not degrees.
2. Who teaches. An institute's name on a programme does not always mean its faculty teach every session. Ask for the faculty list and the ratio of live to recorded content.
3. Format and timing. If you work US- or UK-overlap hours, check that live sessions don't clash with your calls. Weekend cohorts suit most working professionals; plan on 8–15 hours of study a week.
4. Total cost. Compare the full fee including GST, EMI interest or processing charges, and exam fees. Ask your employer about learning reimbursement before paying yourself.
5. Placement terms. Ask for the number enrolled, the number eligible for placement support and the number placed in the last completed cohort — in writing.
6. Proof of work. Good programmes make you ship projects you can explain in an interview. If the syllabus is mostly quizzes, keep looking.

What to expect on pay

Pay in Indian tech varies too widely to promise a figure. As a rough guide only (indicative; varies by employer and experience), freshers and career switchers entering analyst or junior developer roles commonly see offers in the ₹4–9 lakh a year range, while experienced ML and AI engineers at product companies and GCCs earn substantially more. City, employer type, prior experience and interview performance matter more than which course you took, so be wary of any provider that promises a specific package.
